Divine Mercy Sunday

''Doubting Thomas, also the Divine Mercy Sunday”

Today we are invited to reflect on God’s mercy and its effect in our lives. Mercy or compassion is the identification of oneself with the sufferings and difficulties of others which prompts one to action. Mercy is a gift because no one can demand it but only plead for it. Incarnation of Jesus is an act of mercy which saves humanity from its sinfulness and offers it hope. After the death of Jesus, the disciples were disheartened and dispirited. But Jesus’ apparition filled them with peace, courage, hope and joy. The experience of the mercy and love of God made the first Christians to share everything in common and to live in harmony and service. After having experienced Jesus’ boundless mercy, Thomas confesses, ‘My Lord and my God’’, which is the greatest expression of one’s surrender to God. The experience of mercy, be it of God or of others, usually makes us merciful. Divine Mercy Sunday invites us to remember the mercies we have experienced in our lives, and this experience should make us agents of mercy. As Thomas touches Christ and is won over to believe, every doubt is cast aside by him and our faith is strengthened as well. So the disciple who doubted, then felt Christ’s real wounds, becomes a trustworthy witness to the reality of the Resurrection. Indeed, "The disbelief of St Thomas has done more for our faith than the faith of the other disciples altogether", Says St. Gregory the Great.
